In the state of Colorado, traffic violations go on your driving record. Each time you are issued a citation, there are “points” that appear on your record. If those points start to add up, you become at risk of losing your driver’s license. In some cases, you could even go to jail. The most common traffic violations add four points to your record, such as running a red light, no proof of insurance, running a stop sign, speeding 10-19 mph over the limit, or failing to yield to a pedestrian. Your license can be suspended in the state of Colorado from accumulating 12 points or more within 12 months or 18 points or more within 24 months.

Car insurance companies often like to keep tabs on your driving record, and sometimes it is to offer incentives for good driving, but it can also give them the ability to increase your insurance premiums if they discover you have traffic violations and points on your driving record. Your insurance company is likely to perceive you as being at a higher risk of an accident if you have more traffic violations on your record and decide to increase your rate.
